Bear River – Where Clotheslines are Legal

April 19, 2008 · 6 Comments

I read today what seems from here like a very funny ‘ha-ha’ article about clotheslines in Toronto, my home-town.

Ontario’s Premier Dalton McGinty has declared that it will soon be legal to hang a clothesline in the suburbs. The objective is to reduce energy consumption. Several chain stores will even be giving away clotheslines to early-bird customers.

I never even realized that clotheslines are illegal in parts of Ontario. That is completely idiotic, ridiculous, elitist, pretentious and snobbish, not to mention foolish and stupid.

This is a picture of our clothes drying in like, 20 minutes on the clothesline in the house we are moving into. They smelled so good when we brought them into the house.

Here’s an FYI for the laundry criminals in Ontario (LOL). Because pants are bulkier at the top what with pockets and zippers and lots of seams, if it’s windy outside then it’s best to hang them by the legs because the waving in the breeze will dry them from the bottom up. If it is still outside, then gravity will be the larger factor and then clothes dry from the top down so then it’s best to attach the bulky part directly to the clothesline.

Even Larry wanted to get in on the act. As you can see, hanging up the clothes also provides good stretching opportunities.

The other advantage is that you get to look around when you’re hanging stuff out to dry.

Here’s hoping you have a windy day!

I read your post in amazement!!!!! I had no idea that washing lines were illegal in some parts of Ontario either. Seems absurd. Good job the police are not backing dating arrest warrents for all those naughty washer women!! Did not realise that trying to save the planet could get you in so much trouble.

    Hi Flora,

We’ve always had a clothesline, and always washed our clothes and hung them out as soon as the weather makes that activity enjoyable. Oh bad old Ontario eh! We’re right in the middle of the city, and lots of people around us hang their clothes out too. I hear crime is up in the city. But it’s good clean fun.

Hey as Jon Stewart pointed out be careful
of your adjectives — since when is “elitist”
the adjective right wing American media
use to describe Obama, a bad thing?

Down home folks like George Bush, and
now Hillary are just plain ole good old,
gun toting folks. I’ll take “elitist” any day.
Some of your best friends are elitist.

Love your blog, and your pictures. I
am laughing, so don’t take my comment the wrong way.

It seems the Toronto Star was correct in positioning laundry on the clothesline as a controversial topic!

That it can even tie in with the America elections is proof to me how out of the loop I am…..I’d even go so far as to say…..hung out on the line!!!

OMG, I had no idea that closelines were illegal in some parts of Ontario. I can’t believe they actually made it a rule! >_> Good thing they’ve fixed it! (McGuilty is good for something!)
